10 second Windows 10 tip, Win+E

I installed Windows 10 on Monday and I was left rather distressed when I discovered that one of my favourite shortcut keys Win+E behaviour had changed. Rather than presenting me with My Computer (now known as This PC) I was navigated to this oddity.

Oddity
After some fumbling about I found my fix! 😀

Universal Windows App Base Project

In an attempt to boost my productivity, I decided to write a base WinRT project with the essentials for all my projects. Here is what I consider essentials for all my projects:

  • MVVM Light
  • A Navigation Service
  • A Message Service
  • Global app service

These 3 items define a base universal Windows project for me, I will get into some detail on all of these in a bit. Other services like data or location services can be needed for an app but aren’t essential to all apps.

Solution hierarchy
Nothing fancy happening here. Remember to keep all files in a logical folder structure, folders work a lot better than an endless list of obtusely name files.

Hour of Code at the Durban University of Technology

We’re hosting a Hour of Code station at DUT this weekend. Pop in and complete your Hour of Code 😀

Below is an excerpt with all the details.

Hello-

I’d like to introduce myself, I am a Microsoft Student Partner (MSP) which is a volunteer student program active in over 110 countries around the world, and I’ve been selected a Microsoft technology expert on my university campus.

The MSP program is for students who realize the best technology careers come to those chase their dreams.  Part of this dream is to be able to share my passion for technology with others and make sure the next generation of students understand how  computer science can be a catalyst to create and achieve great things and unlock opportunities for youth around the world.

We know that computers are everywhere, but fewer schools teach computer science than 10 years ago. Good news is, we’re on our way to change this. If you heard about the Hour of Code last year, you might know it made history. In one week, 15 million students tried computer science! Computer science was on homepages of Google, MSN, Yahoo! and Disney. Over 100 partners came together to support this movement.

The reason I’m contacting you is this year we’d like to make it even bigger. We are hosting an Hour of Code station at The Durban University of Technology. Everyone (kids, parents, CEOs etc.) is welcome to come in and complete their Hour of Code, even USA president Barack Obama recently completed his Hour of Code.

Date: 13 December 2014
Time: 09:00 – 12:00 (Anytime within this period)
Venue: 22 Winterton Walk,
DUT, Ritson Campus, LAB 5

We’re hoping to reach 100 million participants by the end of the year and I’m hoping with your support  you’ll allow me to help contribute to that goal.

Also we have some goodies for those who complete their Hour of Code at this station 😀

Goodies

Thank you,
